Culinary Arts 1

Describe an experience you had when you were in the minority (outnumbered with an idea, opinion, etc) and how you reacted to that situation.  The experience could be cultural, ethnic, generational, or any other type of situation.  What assumptions did you bring into the situation? How did you feel when you were there? Did you experience any obstacles to communication? If so, what were they?  Were they overcome? What was the lasting impression you took from this situation and experience?

  2. I once had to ride a bus of all seniors. I didn't really know any of them, so I kinda just sat there and felt awkward.

  4. There was this one time that I was in a Chinese restaurant and they were speaking Chinese and looking around. they were many of them talking about something funny and I wanted to know. The impression I took was they were just talking about all the American people.

  6. Actually I had this happen to me last night, so I was wanting a new dog and I went and asked my mom and dad if I could get another dog with my own money. I was defiantly out numbered because they were saying that I wasn't going to take care of the dog and they would have to take care of it so I tried convincing them that I would take care of it. So they finally gave in and told me that I could get another dog I just had to take care of the new dog.

  7. When I'm with my dads side of the family. Its very cultural and generational. That side of my family is Lithuanian and..Old. So I just sit there listening to them talk and have no idea what is going on. My great grandma has tried to teach me Lithuanian but that was forever ago and it just doesn't sink in.

  8. In color guard for our winter guard theme everyone wants to do the shows that everyone else has done because they feel we can do them better. I told them we should do a show that no one else has done , so we can be original. Being original is good, because you can start fresh and make up the whole thing. The lasting impression was that in the end we ended up doing the new theme so that we could start fresh.

  9. We were going to do a drama at my church and there was a drama I had in mind but, the rest of the drama team wanted to do a different one. It didn't really bother me that they wanted to do a different one because I like them all.

  10. When I started working I was in the minority because I was the youngest there. I'm still the youngest there, but I've been there longer than most the staff now. I'd stand over by the fryers waiting to get orders while they would be laughing and talking. They'd also be throwing around different names for things like "All day" and "add blank" and I had no idea what they were. But in time I learned what they are, and frequently use them. And now every time a new guy comes in, I make an effort to explain some things to them beforehand so they don't feel like I did when I was new.

  11. One time at school we took a test and the teacher had the right answer as wrong and the wrong answer as right for a question. I tried to tell the teacher that she was incorrect, so another student also said that she was wrong. the teacher thought that she was right, no matter what information from the book proved it. So it was basically it was 7 students against one teacher in a higher authority.

  12. going to get something to eat could be the worse experience when it comes down to you and a group of your friends. everybody will have a input on where they want to go. certain people don't like this or cant eat. but everybody has to agree on something they like.

  14. My Grandpa works for Blue Ridge Home Buyers and I work on the weekend with him. Sometimes we have to go to his boss to talk about things we have to do. Since they both are older and know more then I do I listen and hear what they have to say because it is a learning experience to learn new things and how to do it right which can come in handy.

  15. Most of my family are guys. So I grew up being one of the guys. So I usually go get my cousins and we will go out to eat or downtown. Well I'm the one with the car and the money yet they still want to tell me where we are going to go eat. And I am always out numbered with them.
